Welcome to Willow Class!
Willow Class is a class of 25 Reception and Year 1 children, taught by Mr Stott and supported by Mrs Stott and Miss Hoggarth. We are also lucky to have the support of Miss Lexie on a Tuesday and Wednesday.
This year we have transformed into the Willow Hive as are thinking about the bees and why they are so important for the planet and our future! We work together, as a hive, and support each other no matter what – just like the amazing bees on our planet!
In the first half of the summer term, our focus will be on developing independent thinking and life skills through engaging, hands-on learning. Children will be encouraged to use the power of their minds as they take part in practical science experiments that promote curiosity, observation, and problem-solving.
In geography, we will begin learning how to use simple maps and take part in local fieldwork, helping children to understand the world around them and develop key geographical skills.
In design and technology, we will be exploring simple mechanisms by creating split-pin models, helping children understand how things move and work.
Our history learning will take us on a journey through time as we explore the history of toys. Children will investigate how toys have changed over the years, how materials and designs have developed, and how the way children play has evolved.
This half term is all about thinking creatively, working collaboratively, and discovering how things work through purposeful, practical learning.
In the second half of the summer term, we will shift our focus to the natural wonders of our world, with a particular emphasis on the coral reef. This topic will inspire awe and curiosity as we explore the beauty and importance of this underwater ecosystem.
Children will learn about the history of the coral reef’s discovery, with a focus on the voyages of Captain James Cook. Through this historical lens, we will explore what it was like to be an explorer in the past and how such discoveries changed the way people viewed the world.
Science will remain a key focus, as we continue our hands-on approach with a range of fun and engaging water-based experiments. These activities will help children make connections between scientific ideas and the real world, fostering a deeper understanding of nature and the environment.
Throughout the term, we will also reflect on the importance of caring for our planet, encouraging children to think about how we can protect and preserve the wonders of the natural world for future generations.
Join us in Willow Class as we discover, learn and grow together with a sense of adventure and a big heart for the planet!
Each week, our beautiful classroom bee, Poppy Pollinator, will be sent home with the Golden Box winner. We can’t wait to see the exciting adventures she gets up to!
Year 1 will have a weekly spelling test every Friday, based on the words sent home at the end of each half term for the upcoming term.
At the end of each half term, we also host the Class Dojo Awards to celebrate the outstanding behaviour of the top three highest-scoring students on Class Dojo. These special awards recognise the incredible children who consistently work hard and serve as true role models in the Willow Hive.
